The Days of Innocence and Contentment

Driving down to work this morning, i was listening to front page news on my favorite radio station, Classic FM97.3 and a story was mentioned that got me thinking.

It was a story about a Cleaner who found N12 million ($27,000) in a toilet and handed it over to the security till the owner of the bag came forward to claim it.

And a question rose within me, which interestingly, Jimi Disu, one of the anchors also raised, that people should swear, what they would do if they had found that money. And what struck me in particular was the fact that she earns N7,800 monthly ($37) which is far below the monthly minimum wage approved which is N18,000 ($85). (At the current exchange rate).

Single parents don’t need anonymous generosity but public respect

Powered by Guardian.co.ukThis article titled “Single parents don’t need anonymous generosity but public respect” was written by Suzanne Moore, for theguardian.com on Monday 26th January 2015 11.51 UTC

Are random acts of kindness so rare that they are actual news? Apparently so. A young woman Samantha Welch was on a long train journey with her three year-old son. She did her best to entertain him, playing games with him and letting him listen to music. Eventually he fell asleep and because the train was full, she pulled him on to her lap so that she could offer his seat to other people.

Anyone who has travelled with a child will be familiar with this. Trains and boats and planes. Or actually buses. You try your best to keep the child quiet and happy and it’s exhausting. There are times when they become fractious, whatever you do. There are tantrums that not even a bag of Wotsits can soothe. There are stairs in most stations where people rush by as you bump up a buggy with a child and a heavy bag.

There are times when you need to leave your luggage to take a child to the loo or when a flight attendant will dump a tray of food on top of you when you have a toddler on your knee.

Travelling with a small child can be hard work, work that single parents do all the time. If you are not in that stage of life, it’s easier not to notice: move away from wailing infants and put your headphones in.

One man, however, did notice that this young woman in front of him was doing her best. As he left the train he tapped Samantha on the shoulder and said she had dropped something . It was a note that said:

“Have a drink on me. You are a credit to your generation, polite and teaching the little boy good manners. Man on train at table with glasses and hat. Have a lovely evening.
“PS I have a daughter your age, someone did the same for her once. Hope when she has children she is as good a mother as you.”

There was a fiver wrapped inside it.

The Daily Mail reported this story and wants to find this “generous stranger”. Kindness is clearly no longer its own reward. The subtext to this sweetness, though, is that of a decent man acknowledging a good young mother. Who knew such a thing existed? Samantha said: “People look at you and judge you every day when you’re a single mum but getting that note made me feel special and proud. That might sound silly, but all I’m trying to do is make a better life for my son.”

That does not sound silly at all. It makes perfect sense. Where, pray, does the assumption that single mothers do not want the best for their children come from?

Is it only the province of perfect couples to teach their children basic manners or how to behave in public? Actually, as a single parent, it has always been to my advantage to make my children as portable as possible.

But I am happy that this young women’s efforts were recognised. What we need though is not simply anonymous generosity but public respect. This has long been in short supply from the top down as single mothers are spoken of as failures, burdens, and responsible for so many societal ills. Besides dropping us a fiver and helping us with our bags, the ultimate kindness would be to relieve us of the baggage of nasty and negative preconceptions. We mostly try to get it right most of the time.

It’s nice that at least one person saw that.

You Are Unemployable Because…

Have you ever sat down to ask yourself this question? Ok, lets pause for a moment if you are reading this and you have been hunting for a job for a while now. How unemployable are you?

Am sure you have never given it much serious thought right? That’s one of the reasons why you are not unemployable. Now don’t get me wrong or conclude that am following the norms and newspaper reports. Be it far from it. Follow me on this “short” journey.

We have different people in the job hunting market. University Graduates, Doctorate graduates, different school drop-outs, “Job drop-outs”, “wrong job drop outs” and etc. And the singular question all these people ask is “Why me?”

Now, am not going to bore you with all the statistical details of unemployment and why youths are not employed. The information is on the open market for all and with Election coming up next month, promise galore on the job opportunities to be provided. But we ar yet to see the actionable plans to that effect save from one candidate and it’s yet to be explicitly clear.

Scourge of our Roads

It manifests itself, like a hydra headed monster each time without fail. It’s no respecter of persons and has refused to be tamed nor corralled.

To what do we owe this evil resident on our roads, that is blood sucking, hair-raising and bone chilling in approach and delivery.

How did it become so entrenched in the fibre of our being that we are now inured to it and seem unperturbed about it.

The Nigeria situation has reached such an alarming proportion even to the point of sheer frustration and near helplessness. Nigeria continues to feature in the bottom half of World Health Organisation country rankings of road traffic accidents. The country’s 149th ranking in 2009 out of 178 member states indicates the hazards associated with road transportation in a country that is largely dependent on its road network for economic, social and physical activities (Sumaila, AbdulGaniyu Femi, Road crashes trends and safety management in Nigeria). Pressing on his research, (Sumaila, 2013) stated that; Indeed news of road traffic accidents in Nigeria no longer stirs any surprise. What may be shocking, however, is the magnitude of the fatality.

God Give Us Men!!!…..Part 4

Its quite surprising the depth of apathy and insensitivity our society has gone into. Sympathy has gone through the window for us and its been replaced by callous demeanor that betrays the very core of human sensibilities.

Scenes of tragedy, helplessness and hopelessness is regularly glossed over in our society and its now the norm to hear, see and feel it.

It bothers me how things degenerated to this level and wonder what caused the spiral in morals and brotherliness. A brother in help on the expressway in the middle of nowhere is on his own at the mercies of the Gentlemen of the Highway…..

An accident scene turns to a video shooting scene instead of a life saving scene. A bomb blast scene turns into a scene of further nightmare and gore simply because we have failed to understand the concept of Help and Emergency.

We so much take things for granted and abuse a whole lot of process. Everybody wants to have their say and do at the same time without recourse to the other person. Everyone is in a rush to go home, hence taking one way and facing traffic is perfectly acceptable to the detriment and risk of the lives of others.

Its a dog eat dog world where “My personal Agenda” is always on the front burner and not that of others.

God Give Us Men!!!!!!

Miracle of Prayer….Conclusion.

“This is jackpot, both a car and a boy to sell off! Am in money!!” “atleast, i can pay Iya Risikat her money, and be able to buy 2 more buses and be my own boss……no more doing boy-boy to anybody” Shina thought to himself, and gave the kid sitting beside him, a leering smile. He was so happy with his craftiness. He fooled the woman out of the car after offering to help her.
“She’s such a fool!! How can she be so gullible enough to get out of the car and leave her son in the car? DOesn’t she know that the world has become a wicked place?” “Trust no one at all!!” He smiled as he ruminates over it. But then a pang of guilt hit him in the guts. “But what has this woman done to deserve this?” The thought came to him. She just asked for help, is it now a crime to ask? “How am i to trust the people am going to meet even? What if the Police come looking for me what will i do?” Fear gripped him at that point and a terrible dread came over him in that instant. And as if the car sensed his thoughts, it stopped right in the middle of the road!

Shina got down, and tried starting the vehicle to no avail. He had a bit of a vehicle mechanic background and did some test runs on the car, but the car simply would not start. It was as if it wasn’t the same vehicle that he had driven for the last 20 minutes. The battery failed to come on, the lights all went out totally. He was perplexed, his fanciful day-dreams went out like the car battery and he stood dazed and confused on what to do.

The vehicle had stopped in the remote area of waterworks, Eleyele, and it was a very quiet, unsecured area prone to all shades of characters. He got two rough-looking guys to help him with the car, he had known them for a while and they all tried looking at what the problem was.

Somewhere, somehow, he heard a voice, push the vehicle away from here. Together with his two other cohorts, they pushed the car up the hill of the waterworks to the main road. From there, like a programmed robot, they pushed the car down the hill-side road of Eleyele, up the hill-side road to Fan milk. They stopped on the way and people gave them curious stares wondering why they can’t get a towing vehicle to tow the vehicle. But the men were fervent with the task at hand. As if been hounded by legions from hell, they could not dare take a breather for more than 2 minutes before they set to the task again.

Fadeke and her husband Joe sat in the living room, heads down, wondering what they would do next. The Police Officers had assured them they will find Little Abe and bring him home safe, but it left no room of comfort for the family. As the evening breeze fanned itself around there house on a hill, they sat in fervent prayer for the recovery of their son. Joe was going out and coming in, standing by the gate, looking across the valley hoping against hope to catch a glimpse of his son walking up the road or the car coming up…but it was all futile.

Around 6pm, they heard a knock at the gate. Both husband and wife were startled at the knock and rushed to the door, Fadeke stood rooted to the spot when she saw Shina alongside her Son, Abe at the gate!!!! For seconds, Husband and Wife stood gawking them unbelieving, before Fadeke snatched Abe from his hands and gave him a bear hug, weeping and dancing that he had been found. Joe stepped outside to converse with Shina, asking him how he got to know the house, he replied he didn’t know, but that they pushed the car all the way here. Sure enough, Shina together with his two friends, were panting like a deer that had run a 100 km stretch and badly in need of water.

Joe offered them water to drink, went out to check the car, got in and turned the ignition, and like a brand new car, the engine purred to life!!! The three men were stood in unbelief at the turn of events. The swore over everything they could swear on that the vehicle had refused to start, hence they had pushed it all the way!! If only the vehicle could respond and confirm what they were saying, it will be a welcome relief to them, but it seems all the strength had been drained out of their body after it seem the legions of hell had wiped them into a frenzy to get the car and the kid home! They were panting, worn out and wasted thoroughly by the time they got to the house of Joe and Fadeke.

They thanked them profusely and bid them farewell, praying never to set eyes on them again till eternity.

A joyous mood overcame their household that evening. Joe postponed his trip till the next day while he led the family in prayer of thanksgiving to God. Grandma was so relieved, she stayed in the toilet for an hour, worshipping God, for she had been pressed since morning but would not get up to use the toilet. Oye and Ope were just too glad to have Abe back in the house for them to continue their Police and thief games, oblivious to what was going on. For Abe, it was just another day of adventure for him. Totally unaware of the strange events and the implications.

Monday morning, Fadeke was at the Police Station to report that her son had been found, and the vehicle located. The Police Officers on duty, doubted she was the same person that came in Saturday afternoon to log in a report. She was dressed in a white well starched nurse uniform, looking prim and proper. Not until she narrated the events that they believed she was indeed the same person and found the story of the recovery incredible to believe. It was like a fairy tale to them. The car dying on the would be kidnapper, and him pushing the car all the way to their house that he had never been before!!!!

She went to the Park as well to show her appreciation, they marvelled that it was she they actually did saw on Saturday and praised God for his mercies. They also informed her, they had expelled Shina from their park, for he brought them into disrepute with People and was a blemish to their association.

Meanwhile, oh his majestic throne, God gave a knowing smile as he accepted the worship of Fadeke and her family and all the people concerned and gave an order for a protective hedge be placed round the family from that day from now on till eternity.

NB:
Fadeke later went to the hospital to be treated for her injuries, which miraculously, where only superficial with no major damage at all.

Travails of a Nation

Its 6:31pm on a wet monday evening. Ideally i should be in class..but don’t have the slightest motivation to attend not with the rain soaked streets of Lagos. but its really the amount of work on my desk that bogged me down.

Even though atimes i wonder, as i am wondering now, why i feel so exhausted after a day’s job of just sitting behind the system..but i guess as i have been told, the white hairs growing on my head at this very young age of mine..speaks volume of what i try to accomplish daily. Interestingly, i have a colleague who gets really worried about it and says several people she knows, who work themselves at their job in terms of mental capacity are growing white hairs….But i ask, why is my boss not growing white hairs…probably because he wears an afro and he maintains it regularly, hence the white hairs remain deep unseen to the public. maybe an expedition will lead us there..lololol

But be it as it may, my heart grieves for an evil that is becoming synonymous with our nation. I wonder, when did we become so inured to the pain of others  and carry on with our lives with no sense of compassion at all.

Much Ado About Sex…….

Its quite interesting, the much interest and passion sex invokes in people and the general reaction to it.

Sex, despite the times we are in now, still seems muted in in this part of our world but atimes veiled in conversation unlike the first world nations where its the norm and without restraint.

Even at that, while our conversations regarding sex may be “veiled” the manner in which its invading our society and sub-concious is highly alarming and the rate at which we get involved in it, either physical in the act itself or mental..is something else. We are in a world saturated by sex…images, sound, smell….name it..it all envelopes us all round. like a thick fog.

A Nation Under Siege Part 1

The recent events in my Country Nigeria since January 1 2012 has been nothing short of despair coupled with anger.

Perhaps we should back date it to 25th December 2011 the Christmas day gift to Nigerians with the bombing of a Catholic Church by Boko Haram (BH) with the attendant lose of lives including whole families.

BH has grown from a serpent that was crushed on the head but fatally wounded into an hydra headed monster that is blood thirsty and uncontrollable, hungry for revenge.

The spate of bombings carried out by this “faceless” group in the last 24 days has shown how powerful and ruthless the monster has grown.

Kano bombing of security formations across the state on friday with over 200 dead, Damaturu following on Saturday and Bauchi early Sunday morning with our security and intelligence agencies looking lost like a man marooned on an unknown island.

Perhaps most bitter and extremely disgusting is the reaction of the President in person of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. It took him over 7hrs to respond to the Xmas day bomb blast which occured during first mass, that is before he attended church where he danced and was all smiles and received state house delegation who came to visit him before he uttered a word about the bombing. What callousness!

If that was anything to go by, January 1st fuel subsidy was removed shooting up the pump price to N141 from N65! Of course, NLC/TUC called for a strike, and were supported by Civil Liberty Groups across the country. And it resulted into a 5 day all out strike action with peaceful mass rally in different parts of the country and the Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota re-christened Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park became synonymous with the movement that is now known as Occupy Nigeria.

Jesus is weak….

Many of you will wonder why this absurd title…but its the current reality of our faith, what I have come to notice and observe over a while now.

Jesus is weak when we no more believe that the mere mention of his name brings the whole universe to its knees in worship but we add prefixes to make it sound more powerful ie, in the mighty name of….

Jesus is weak when we believe praying in the name of the Holy Spirit and Jesus gives us sure-fire that our prayers will be heard. Not only that, give roles and acts to the Holy Spirit and adjectives that was never mentioned in the scriptures nor used. ie, In the Mighty name of Jesus! Holy Ghost fire! Power of the Holy Ghost! Holy Spirit Fire! Thunder of the Holy Spirit!

Jesus is weak when we believe we have to wake up God very early in the morning with a loud megaphone and speakers and beg him to favor us today and waking up the whole neighbourhood in the process. Wonder why Jesus himself had to go quietly to a place and commune with his Father early in the morning.
